It seems that following the iPhone alarm bug a few months ago the turn of the year has brought more craziness to the iPhone alarm, there were several reports on Twitter last night from countries that had already welcomed in 2011 of iPhone alarms not going off when they should which were repeated this morning from Europe and presumably reports from America & Canada will surface soon.

How To Fix iPhone Alarm Bug

Further investigations have shown that the problem thankfully only occurs with one-off alarms. Meaning that if you set the alarm to recur it will still work. Not an ideal solution but at least we can set alarms that we can rely on until Apple release a bug fix for one off alarms.

Following the iPhone 4 announcement last week and the news that 2 weeks today the phone will be available all we need to know is how much it will cost.

Apple have not yet released UK prices but with prices at $199 (16gb) and $299 (32gb) UK prices of £150 and £250 seem a good bet.

Bad News

When it comes to contracts, o2 have just announced their new tariffs for iPhone 4, but it’s not good news.

The table below shows some details of the new tariffs including significant cuts in what they are currently offering,

The 3 biggest changes:

Current ‘Unlimited Data’ being reduced to just 500MB with most contracts!

Number of minutes reduced / price increased.

MMS messages now cost 20p each (previously they were taken out of Text allowance, 1 MMS = 4 texts)

Good News

The good news is that unlike the USA who are stuck with a single carrier (AT&T) we have lots of options. It has been revealed that besides o2, Orange & Vodafone who currently offer iPhone 3G/3GS the iPhone 4 will be available on T-Mobile and Three as well. Nobody but o2 has announced their contracts yet but we can hope that when they do there will be some more competitive tariffs available.

Being an Apple geek and incredibly impatient too, as soon as I’d finished watching the keynote from the Apple iPhone OS 4.0 event in April I just HAD to try the new OS. There was no way I could wait until ‘Summer’ when it is officially released. So I immediately registered with Apple as a developer and gained access to the early beta versions of the new OS. Here’s my account of how it’s been going.

Early Days (Beta 1 & 2)

The first version I installed was incredibly unstable, it worked ok as a phone and the native apps worked fine (except the camera). Unfortunately most 3rd party apps crashed. As much as I wanted to test OS4 I couldn’t handle the instability at this stage and promptly restored OS3 from my backup. Thankfully there wasn’t a long wait for beta2 to be released and it brought big improvements. There were still a few incompatible apps and more crashes than I was used to but it was much more stable and usable in general. Still no camera or ability to take screenshots though.

Almost Perfect (Beta 3 & 4)

The last 2 releases have brought major stability improvements and I have been running OS4 beta 3 and now beta 4 for a few weeks without reverting back to an old backup. There are only 2 of my existing apps that don’t appear to work yet, they are LinkedIn and the Sky Mobile TV app. I can live without LinkedIn and although I miss the Sky app occasionally, not enough to make me give up the OS4.0 features that I have already grown to love.

Why I Love iPhone OS4.0

There are apparently 100 new features in the new OS. I can’t claim to have tested or even noticed all of them but many I have. Some are huge, some are trivial but still fun or useful. Some we should have had years ago like many other smartphones. The following features are the ones that have been the most useful for me in the time i’ve been running OS4.

Custom Wallpaper

Ok let’s get this one out of the way first! Yes you’ve been able to do it on most other smart phones (and plenty of not so smart phones) for years. Now we can too. It’s not a huge deal but it is nice to be able to customise and it’s amazing what a different look and feel you can give your phone by changing the background image. It’s great that you can set a different image for the Home screen as the Lock screen too.

Spell Check

This is another feature that has been lacking from the iPhone for 2 long. Although as with Cut & Paste I think the way they have implemented it is brilliant so it’s probably been worth the wait. If you’re familiar with Mac OSX the way spell check works will be very familiar to you. It works across virtually all apps, when you misspell a word it will be underlined with a dotted red line. You simply tap the word to receive a number of possible suggestions of which you tap the correct one. Very simple and it’s the feature I have had the most use out of over the past few weeks. I’m much more comfortable sending business emails to clients when I’m confident there are no embarassing speeling mistakes.

Folders

If you’re anything like me – addicted to buying/trying apps and have been using an iPhone for years you’ll have gathered a rather large collection. Mine spanned 9 full pages before I was finally able to do something about them. Introducing OS4 folders! Which have allowed me to reduce my 9 pages of apps to just 3! And that includes the home screen!

Folders are incredibly simple but their effect is huge and is probably the one OS4 feature that I really couldn’t live without. I recently purchased an iPad that is of course running OS3 and I miss folders badly. To create a Folder you simply hold your finger down on an icon so that they wobble and then drag one icon over another, a Folder will then be created containing both icons. It has a go at guessing the name of the folder based on the category of app you put in it but you can of course rename them and add more icons. You can even put a Folder in the dock which is very cool.

The one limitation is that you can only have 12 apps per folder, I would have preferred to have more, even if it meant vertical scrolling but it’s a simple enough task to create say ‘Games #1′ and ‘Games #2′ if more than 12 are required.

‘Multitasking’

Besides ‘lack of Flash’ this is the main argument given against the iPhone. Maybe it’s a fair complaint that there has never been multitasking, although personally I understand Apple’s concerns about reducing performance and battery life by having multiple apps running in the background. Which makes their implementation of ‘multitasking’ perfect, although it appears to be true multitasking it’s actually just a clever way of switching apps. Unless both apps absolutely have to be open (say if you’re streaming music from Spotify or online in Skype) the first is actually paused while you switch to the second and you can switch back and forth quickly and easily.

Double tapping the Home button brings up a sort of dock style application switcher, similar to CMD-Tab in Mac OSX. It displays a horizontal scrolling list of apps that support multitasking for you to switch too.

Scroll left and you get iPod controls as well as current track information and the Portrait/Landscape lock. Scroll right and you get more apps to switch too.

Camera – 5x Digital Zoom

I don’t use the camera on my iPhone that much since it’s not the best quality and digital zooms only make that worse. However, it is still nice to finally have one available.

Tapping the screen in the camera app brings up a slider which you can then slide in or out to zoom. Simple but effective. Auto focus has now been added to video recording as well as photos.

Mail: Unified Inbox & Threaded Messages

Mail for iPhone is great as far as mobile mail applications go but it has been missing 2 key features until now. The first is Unified Inbox which means all of your various email accounts can feed into the same Inbox, saving you from checking each one individually. A huge time saver if you have many inboxes to check.

The second feature is one of the best for me, threaded messages are finally here! As a GMail user it was frustrating to go from nice threaded conversations on my desktop machines to the mess off chronological emails in iPhone Mail. If you don’t know what threaded messages are, it basically is just keeping ‘conversations’ together. So the original email and all replies are kept together rather then being separated by however many different emails you might have received in between.

There are other Mail improvements, the most notable being an attachment viewer which allows you to open a variety of mail attachments right within the app.

iPod Improvements (including create Playlists!)

There are several iPod improvements, the biggest for me is the ability to create and edit playlists on the iPhone itself. Gone are ‘Playlist On The Go’ and instead you edit and create playlists exactly as you would on the desktop version of iTunes and they sync to the desktop version too. It’s very quick and easy, a welcome addition.

There are also some nice UI improvements such as an artwork thumbnail in Album view.

Best Of The Rest

The features above are things that I have personally benefited from during the past few weeks of using iPhone OS 4.0. There are plenty of others that I either haven’t used much or are not important to me, they maybe to you though. Here’s a few of them:

Games Center: Think XBox Live for iPhone games! Not much happening in there yet but should be cool once launched (See image)

SMS Search - Very useful to search for a particular text message

SMS Character Count – Helpful if you’re sending long message to users with older phones or if you need to keep track of how many SMS messages you’re using.

Bluetooth Keyboard - I linked my iPhone to my Apple bluetooth keyboard, it worked great and was kind of cool. For me it’s not a huge feature as I almost always have my Macbook Pro or iPad with me, if you don’t and you actually use your iPhone for heavy email/text production then it could be amazing.

Improved battery life? - Actually I’ve no idea if this is true or not, there’s certainly no mention of it in the keynote which seems strange as you’d think they’d like to shout about it. I have to say though, it really does feel as though my battery has been lasting significantly longer these last few weeks!

I’m sure the more I play with OS4 the more new features I will discover. I feel the best will come a few months after it is officially released once App developers have had time to make use of all the new features, especially Multitasking. I’m looking forward to seeing what sort of use apps can make from it.

iPhone OS4 is still scheduled to be released ‘Summer 2010′. We should know more June 7th when Steve Jobs addresses the WWDC and announces details of the new iPhone at the same time.

* IMPORTANT UPDATE June 2011 *

Since writing this article in May 2009 several other apps have appeared that perform similar functions. Although Quickoffice has stood up to the competition well and is still a good app my current recommendation is actually ‘Documents To Go‘

Docs2Go is a Universal app so can be used on iPad too, it’s fast and very stable, here are a few of it’s main features:

• EDIT, CREATE & VIEW Word, Excel & PowerPoint files (Office 2007/2008/2010)
• View PDF, iWork & other files
• iPad/iPhone 4/iOS 4: Send & receive attachments using the built-in Mail app
• Access, view, edit & sync supported files stored in Google Docs, Dropbox, Box.net, iDisk & SugarSync
• Free desktop app (Win & Mac) with 2way file sync (WIFI required)

IPAD, IPHONE 4, IOS 4 SPECIFIC FEATURES
• Open & edit files in DocsToGo from any 3rd party app that supports the “Open In” feature (the built-in Mail app can now open supported attachments in DocsToGo)
• Supports iTunes File Sharing via USB cable for moving files

Download Documents To Go

— Original article —-

There are plenty of iPhone apps out there to open and view Microsoft Office files on your iPhone.

That’s all very well, but what if you want to edit or even create them?

I’ve been looking for an iPhone app to do exactly that for a while, I was actually hoping Microsoft would develop an iPhone version of Microsoft Office themselves. Clearly they have no intention of doing that but there is a great alternative.

Quickoffice

Quickoffice (UK Version) contains 3 apps in one. QuickWord, QuickSheet and QuickOffice Files.

QuickWord lets you edit and create new Microsoft Word documents. You can change fonts, font sizes & styles (bold/italic etc..), create lists with bullet points and wait for it… cut & paste!

Cut & Paste???

Yes, you heard it right! Quickoffice have implemented cut & paste to the iPhone before Apple have! It’s not quite as slick as the cut and paste Apple have promised for iPhone 3.0 but it really works!

It also has auto-save and auto-restore features.

QuickSheet is similar to QuickWord but for Excel documents. Again you can edit or create new files, it fully supports even the most advanced Excel features. You can easily adjust column heights & widths or insert new rows/columns.

QuickOffice Files is similar to existing iPhone apps such as Datacase and Filemagnet. It allows you to mount your iPhone as a wireless drive over wi-fi so you can drag and drop files between your iPhone and PC or Mac. You can also view most common filetypes and organise, rename and move them on the iPhone itself.

One of the best features that sets it apart from those similar mentioned apps is the ability to email remote or local files without having to download them! You can also remotely access your iDisk which is very handy.

Highly Recommended!

Overall QuickOffice is a fantastic app for anybody that works with Word & Excel files a lot, it’s obviously not ideal using the iPhone keyboard for large documents but for small changes it’s perfect and I am already using an Excel spreadsheet to help me track business milage whilst i’m out and about.

It’s been a while since I posted an iPhone game review. Sorry about that, it’s partly because i’ve been too busy to play many new games with my business and new website http://celebswhotwitter.com. But also because nothing really grabbed my attention enough to write a review about.

Until Zen Bound that is!

Zen Bound is the most original game I think I have ever played, on any platform. I’m not even sure if ‘game’ is the right description for it.

Hype

I heard a lot of hype about Zen Bound but I didn’t really understand what it was about, even as I started to play I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. After just a few minutes I ‘got it’, it’s a truly beautiful experience.

From the high quality 3D graphics to the ambient music and the incredibly relaxing game play. But what does it actually entail I hear you ask, well put very simply it’s a meditative game of wrapping rope around wooden sculptures. I know that sounds a little, well dull but trust me it’s not.

5 Stars

It’s a shame that the game doesn’t have a Lite version as I know my review won’t have done it justice, check out the ratings on the iTunes App Store though, almost every single person has given it 5 stars which should say something about how good it is!

Download Zen Bound

It’s quite common knowledge that i’m a MASSIVE Apple fan, I own 4 Macs, one of which is connected to my 42″ Plasma TV as a Media Centre, an iPhone, more iPods than I know what to do with, a 1TB Time Capsule and lots of other bits & pieces.

Core Business

I love Apple products, the iPhone is the best thing i’ve ever owned and the iPod revolutionised an entire industry, but however great these products are it’s Apple computers that are their core business. If it wasn’t for the popularity of the early Apple computers, the iPod & iPhone would probably never have existed.

Game Changing

This weekend marked the 25th Anniversary of the first Apple Macintosh computer being released! After being relatively successful with their early Apple I and Apple II computers, it was in 1984 when Steve Jobs the Apple Macintosh that things really began to take off.

In typical Apple style the machine was launched with a now famous $1.5 million TV commercial directed by Ridley Scott. It was aired during Super Bowl XVIII on January 22, 1984. You can watch the commercial below, it’s amazing to think that I was 2 years old when it was aired, it would feel modern even today and it shows why Apple was such a success. But as well as this great campaign they also needed great products and the Macintosh was!

Keynote

You can also watch Steve Jobs unveiling the Macintosh at the keynote, he’s a lot less thin and got a lot more hair but his speech is as good as his recent keynotes have been. I doubt Apple would be anything like the company they are today without his presentation skills. As for the product itself, Steve makes fun of existing ‘dull & ugly’ competitors computers before ‘amazing’ the audience by taking the Mac out of a small bag (Macbook Air out of envelope anybody?). Dramatic music playing over the product demo. Using the revolutionary speech capabilities of the Mac there’s even jokes from the Mac itself such as “Never trust a computer you can’t lift” about IBMs.

Happy 25th Birthday!

I did intend on this post being a history of the Mac range, from this first Macintosh right up to the iMac, MacMini and Macbooks of today. Unfortunately I don’t have the time at the moment and I don’t want to miss the big 25 year date so I will leave it will the original.

Enjoy the videos and here’s to another 25 years of great computers!

The iPhone 3G is a fantastic phone, after trying the Google A1 and the Blackberry Storm i’m still in love with my iPhone. Not only does it look far better than other similar smart phones but it still has by far the best user interface and is a joy to use.

MMS?

One of the few downsides to the iPhone though was the decision to leave out MMS Photo Messaging, as far as I’m aware, that decision has still never been explained by Apple!

Personally it hasn’t been that big of a deal for me not being able to send MMS but I know a lot of people really miss it. What did bother me though was receiving an MMS and having to log into o2′s crappy website to view it. On a revolutionary phone packed full of technology that just didn’t feel right.

App Store Saves The Day

Luckily, one of the BEST things about the iPhone is the App Store and specifically the quality of the app developing community. And thanks to one amazing developer we now have an iPhone 3G MMS App and it’s great!

MMS Photo Messaging – Review

The first thing I like about the App is it’s icon, it mimics the iPhones standard SMS icon, only red and with MMS in place of SMS. This is a nice touch, and they look great together on the homepage. If you didn’t know, it’s impossible to tell it’s an external App.

iPhone-esque Interface

The MMS App itself has a very simple iPhone style interface with your photo messages Inbox, Sent Items and Drafts at the top, and account information below. Then the usual iPhone ‘Create New Message’ icon at the bottom.

The first time you use the App you simply enter your phone number and o2 pin number. After that when you receive a new MMS simply enter your Inbox where you will see all of your photo messages, with any unread being marked with the usual blue spot.

Save, Reply and yes… Forward!

The size and quality of the photo display is far superior to the o2 website and you have more options available. You can easily save the image from the MMS to your phone, you can reply to the sender directly from the app and you can even forward the picture via MMS! (Could the developer please rewrite the SMS app for Apple ;) )

Sending MMS

So receiving photo messages is a joy, what about sending? Well that works great too but there is a minor downside which is the cost. Because this is a 3rd party app and nothing to do with either Apple or o2 you must purchase MMS Credits from the developer and they are a little more expensive than on regular contracts. Costs 38p each when you buy a minimum of 10, you can also buy in bulk of up to 75 MMS but the cost doesn’t decrease much really, 75 MMS will cost you £25.50 with is 34p each.

Personally, I think that this price is acceptable, considering the the App is completely free the developer has a right to earn some profit from a brilliant product which without we wouldn’t be able to send MMS at all.

Excellent Purchase System

Although the credits are a little expensive the system is brilliant, your balance is displayed on the main screen, to purchase more you simple select how many you want to buy and are then taken to a PayPal screen. If you already have a PayPal account you just enter your email address and password and the credits are instantly added to your balance and you’re taken back to the MMS App. If you don’t have a PayPal account you can still purchase credits but obviously will need to fill in credit card and contact details.

Once you have credits you can either use an existing photo from your phone or take a new one with the camera and send to anybody exactly the same as if you were writing an email.

The App That Apple Forgot

In summary this is an amazing app, one that Apple should have included from the start but i’m very grateful to the developer for doing their job for them and don’t mind at all that he is making a premium on the cost of credits.

I’ve heard a lot about Rolando, it’s by far the most hyped iPhone 3G / iPod Touch game so far but does it live up to that hype?

Quite simply, yes!

I would go as far as saying that Rolando the best game i’ve ever played on the iPhone and one of the best games i’ve ever played on any portable device and I mean any portable device, not just mobile phones.

Why Rolando Is Great

Rolando is essentially a puzzle game but the best thing about it is that it’s been designed from the ground up for the iPhone & iPod Touch. Which means that it takes advantage of the fantastic iPhone multi-touch and tilt capabilities. The game play is simply brilliant and every level is so different, it never gets boring!

The visuals are perfect too, they’re cute but very stylish and smooth at the same time. The soundtrack is simply stunning for a mobile phone game.

iPhone: A Bright Future In Gaming

I think it’s fantastic that the iPhone is comparable not with other mobile phone games but with the Nintendo DS & Sony PSP! This game really sets the benchmark of what the iPhone is capable of and i’m really excited for the future of the iPhone as a portable games console.

Download Rolando

Rolando Trailer

Check out the following Rolando trailer, please note that this was a pre-released trailer from very early this year and there are a few differences from the finished product. It does give you an idea of how fantastic the game looks and feels though.

It’s very lucky that I’ve just finished working for the Christmas period. This is because one of my all time favourite games has hit the iPhone App Store and since installing it i’ve not been able to put it down.

It’s Sim City! An all time classic which i’ve owned and loved many different versions of on many different platforms for over 15 years!

Sim City

For those not familiar (really?) with Sim City, it’s a simulation game where you design, build and manage cities. You encounter all sorts of challenges along the way from natural disasters to rioting citizens.

Sim City is pretty much responsible for all of the other simulation games which followed such as The Sims, Theme Park etc..

I could happily spend hours playing the Amiga and then PC (before I saw the light) versions of Sim City, it was probably responsible for me not doing as well as I should have at school! So of course I was excited to try the iPhone version but it had a lot to live up to and I was worried whether it would do or not.

Massive Achievement

Well i’m happy to report that it does live up to my expectations (and memories). It looks like Sim City, sounds like Sim City and feels like Sim City! For me that is a massive achievement to get a game of this type feeling so close to a PC/console game on an iPhone!

Obviously the biggest limitation of the iPhone is the screen size, which is particularly difficult for a game like Sim City, once your city begins to grow it can be quite difficult to follow. But it’s helped out by using the iPhones’ fantastic pinch & zoom techniques.

The user interface has been very cleverly designed, everything is neatly organised and easily accessible but without cluttering the screen. Overall Sim City is a fantastic game and well worth the price tag.

Download Sim City

I’ve also just purchased another exciting iPhone game called Rolando. Look out for a review of it over the next few days.

(using Amazon next day delivery anyway!)

The following list contains 9 great accessories, perfect gifts for anybody with an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Replacement Headphones (Budget)

Sennheiser PX 100 Headphones

As you know I really love Apple products but one of the areas they can be improved are the headphones they provide.

The white headphones included with iPods & iPhones are pretty average, not bad but not at all special. You can spend a LOT of money on amazing quality headphones (see further down this list) however these Sennheiser headphones offer stunning sound for a bargain price.

The sound is very sharp with fantastic bass response, far superior to the included iPhone/iPod headphones. They come with a great little carry case too, definitely a must have for any iPhone user who cares about what they listen too!

Click For More info

iPhone/iPod Speaker Dock

Altec Lansing T612

There are plenty of options around when it comes to speaker/docks for iPhone 3Gs, I chose the Altec Lansing T612 partly because I have just finished developing their website but mainly because they look and sound fantastic!

As I was developing the website and testing the product I seriously expected the T612 to cost £250+, I was shocked to find out that in fact they only cost around half that!

Click For More Info

Screen Protector

Proporta Advanced Screen Protector

The iPhone is such a sexy looking device and although they seem to be made of bullet proof glass we can’t be too careful when it comes to handling them.

This screen protector applies a very thin layer of plastic to your iPhone which is not only scratch resistant but also resistant to finger prints & smudges, keeping your iPhone looking much better at all times as well as protecting it and reducing glare.

Click For More Info

Running / Sports Equipment

Nike + iPod Sport Kit (iPod Nano & iPod Touch)

This is actually not an iPhone accessories, it’s only for iPod Nano and iPod Touch but I love it so much I had to include it anyway.

This kit includes a tracking chip which is places in a pair of trainers and another chip which connects to your iPod. Then as you run your iPod records and stores various data about your workouts which is then synced to the Nike+ website via iTunes.

Very clever technology and just the sort of motivation you need to get you exercising!

Click For More Info

In Car Charging & Music Playing

Griffin iTrip AutoPilot

Control, charge and play your iPod or iPhone in your car.

There are many FM Transmitters out there for iPods but not so many for iPhones. Thankfully this Griffin is great!

The iTrip broadcasts music from your iPod to an FM frequency on your car’s radio so you can play your tunes through your car stereo’s speakers. SmartScan finds the best frequency automatically, no manual searching required!

And the new AutoPilot playback control puts a set of iPod play controls in easy reach so you can stash your iPod/iPhone out of sight in a glove-box or under the seat and still control playback.

Click For More Info

Executive Case

Proporta Alu-Leather Case

There are plenty of iPhone cases around but most are a bit tacky or just plain crap.

This one is great, it looks very smart and professional but is also excellent quality. It uses a sheet of rigid, lightweight aircraft grade aluminium to line the case, protecting your iPhones screen from crushing and impact shocks.

A nice touch is that there are cut aways to give access to ports and controls so that you can use your iPhone whilst it’s in the case. There is also a removable belt clip.

Click For More Info

High Performance Earphones

Klipsch Image – Noise-Isolating In ear headphones

I have to confess that I don’t actually own a pair of these headphones (yet) but I have tested them.

I’m not sure that I can justify the cost but if you can and you’re serious about sound quality of music these are by far the best in ear headphones you are ever likely to find. The sound is phenomenal. They are apparently the smallest, lightest full-range in-ear headphone design too.

The soft gel tips fit into the ear perfectly, I didn’t get to wear them for any length of time but they were so comfy I can only imagine that your ears will never get tired of them. The design is also perfect for canceling outside noise

Click For More info

iPhone Book

iPhone: The Missing Manual (Paperback)

The title of this book is pretty fitting, it’s full of the useful kind of stuff that all manuals should contain but never actually do.

Full of humor, tips, tricks, and surprises, this book teaches you how to extend iPhone’s usefulness by exploiting its links to the Web as well as its connection to Macs or PCs; how to save money using Internet-based messages instead of phone calls; and how to fill the iPhone with TV shows and DVDs for free.

Sports Case

Griffin Streamline armband for iPhone

I have the equivalent of this for my iPod Nano which I use with the Nike+ running system. It’s perfect for working out, keeps your iPod/iPhone close to you for easy access and removes the need for pockets.

Most importantly is how well protected your iPhone will be in this sturdy case, a must have if your running.
