10 More Great iPhone 3G Apps
Posted August 5th, 2008 | 3 Comments
My previous blog post Top 10 iPhone Apps post was written the day after the iPhone 3G and App Store launched.
Many more Apps have appeared in the time since the last post so it’s time to look at another 10 great apps.
1. Twinkle
I love Twitter, in my previous Top 10 iPhone Apps post I listed Twitterriffic and whilst it is still a good app, i’ve been using Twinkle instead lately.
They’re fairly similar apps but Twinkle has a few obvious advantages. The first is the lack of advertisements which is nice. It also allows you to send pictures already on your iPhone rather than having to take a new one each time as with Twitterriffic.
My favourite feature is it’s location awareness. You need to sign up for a Tapulous account and you can then find and chat with people close by to you, thanks to your iPhones GPS!
2. WordPress
This is one of the Apps I was most looking forward too when I bought my iPhone. I was disappointed that it wasn’t ready for launch day.
It allows you to update multiple blogs quickly and easily from your iPhone. With full support for tags, categories, photos from both camera and library. One of the best features is the true preview using Safari.
It’s not for everybody but if you have a WordPress blog you want to update when out and about it’s sure easier that trying to do it in Safari. I also expect this app to get better with future updates.
3. Evernote

Evernote is one of those apps which looks and sounds amazing but doesn’t quite live up to it.
It is essentially a way of keeping digital notes in sync between Macs, PC’s and iPhones. You can store notes, photos, to-do lists and even record audio and be able to access it from any of your devices.
It has an amazing OCR technique which makes the text in images searchable. I have taken photos of business cards with the iPhone camera and I can then search for any detail from those cards, such as a persons name, email address, occupation etc… The same could be done with street signs, food labels etc…
Sounds good huh? And it should be. Unfortunately though, one you have a serious amount of notes it becomes very slow and unstable even over fast Wi-Fi and almost unusable via 3G/EDGE. It has other limitations such as not being able to edit existing notes on the iPhone too.
4. Netshare
Netshare allows you to share your iPhones 3G connection with your computer. Great for people who don’t have a modem and separate contract for their laptops.
The app was removed from The App Store by Apple a few days after launch. It was later returned to many of the stores, including the main US Store. Unfortunately it hasn’t been returned to the UK App Store.
5. 1Password
1Password might just be the best iPhone app around at the moment. It’s certainly incredibly useful anyway.
Basically it securely stores usernames/passwords and web addresses and allows you to automatically login to websites using the stored information. I’ve used 1Password on my Macs for a long time and to have it sync with my iPhone is amazing.
6. Last.FM
I love Last.FM and have used the website for a long time so was obviously excited by the iPhone app.
If you don’t know what Last.FM is go and check it out now. It basically tracks your favourite artists from the music you play in iTunes or your iPod and based on your music taste it creates radio stations of similar music which you can listen to online and now on your iPhone! You can then purchase tracks and albums from the iTunes WiFi Store.
The streaming works surprisingly well over 3G and even EDGE.
7. Google Mobile

I didn’t think much of this App when reading about it. But when I actually used it I realised how useful it is.
It really speeds up any kind of searches you would need to make on your iPhone. Be it searching your contacts or the web. It’s lightning fast, auto-completes web addresses and can produce location aware results.
It also allows one-touch access to other Google services such as Mail, Photos, Talk and Reader.
8. Facebook
Not much to say about this App. We all know about Facebook, we probably all use it and now we can all use it on our iPhones too!
It is actually a good app, I prefer using it to the real website on my computers. It strips away all the crap and leaves a nice clean interface with only the things you need to see.
9. Midomi
In my last iPhone Apps list I featured Shazam which really blew me away. One of the best things about it was that it’s free. I have since learnt that it is only free ‘for a limited time’ and will be paid for soon.
Which makes Midomi all the better, it’s similar to Shazam but is free with no plans to ever charge. As with Shazam you hold the iPhone to anything playing music and it will identify the music for you and let you purchase it from the iTunes store. Midomi takes it a step further and can also identify tracks by humming, singing and even tapping tunes to your iPhone! Amazing stuff!
10. Labyrinth
I featured 2 games in my previous list and have tried many since. The only one worth making this list is Labyrinth.
Anybody of a certain age probably had a real wooden Labyrinth game as a child and this App works exactly the same way. It’s very realistic and very addictive. It really shows off the iPhones accelerometer at it’s best.
You can get the first 10 levels for free which is great. I wish more paid apps would supply demos.
